Thank you for your interest in adopting a pig from Lil’ Orphan Hammies. If you have not already done so, please review our questionnaire to help determine if a miniature pig is the best animal companion for you. You will notice as you proceed that we ask a lot of questions and insist that a number of requirements be met in order to adopt a pig. Why? Because abandoned and relinquished pig pets have become an international issue. Sanctuaries nationwide are at capacity; filled with pigs that exceeded their owner’s expectations for size and care. Pigs make wonderful companions when placed in the right home. We want to ensure that the best possible home is found for each pig and that all prospective pig owners carefully consider just what will be needed to keep a happy and healthy pig pet.
Please review the following information carefully to make sure you understand, and are comfortable with, our adoption process before completing an application.
Completing and submitting an Application for Adoption is the first step towards bringing a pig pal into your home. If you have your eye on an available pig, you may include his or her name on your application. Once we receive your application, we will forward information on caring for miniature pigs as well as information about pigs eligible for adoption, both here at LOH and throughout our rescue network.
Once we review your application, we will be in touch with you to review any concerns and answer any questions you might have. Typically this will be a friendly chat over the phone with a representative of Lil’ Orphan Hammies. At this time, we will also make arrangements for a home-check. A home-check is required if you wish to proceed with welcoming a pig into your home!
All home-checks are completed by an LOH representative. During the home-check, we will cover aspects of pig needs and safety. If any areas of your property are deemed a concern they will need to be addressed and re-inspected before we can place any pigs with you.
Once you have passed the home-check, you will be invited to meet the pigs! If you specified a particular pig on your application, you will be introduced to that pig first (provided he or she is still available for adoption). Visiting is fun and it gives you the opportunity to get to know your pig before you make a commitment to bring him or her home with you.
Before you bring your new family member home, you will be required to sign an Adoption Contract agreeing to provide correct care for your pig for the duration of his or her life. You will also be agreeing to return the pig to LOH should you become unable to care for your pig at any time. Lil’ Orphan Hammies maintains the right to recover the animal should provisions of the Adoption Contract be broken.
You will be asked to pay a $100 adoption fee with your contract. This fee is not for profit. We never breed and we do not sell animals. Adoption fees help us cover general care and veterinary services that were provided to your new pet prior to adoption. When you pay your adoption fee, you will also automatically be enrolled as a Friend of LOH for one year!
Be sure to bring an adequate vehicle and carrier for transporting your new friend home! We can also help with transportation arrangements if needed.
